Simple Homemade Dominican Sofrito/Sazón Recipe

I've been using this homemade sofrito recipe for years and I honestly use it to cook almost EVERYTHING! You can use it when seasoning your meats, when cooking beans, even when making rice like locrio or arroz con pollo.

Here are the only 5 ingredients you will need:

  • 1 bag of Sweet Mini Bell Peppers 🫑 or you can get individual full sized bell peppers in green, red, orange, and yellow.

  • about 20-30 garlic 🧄 cloves or 1/2 a cup of minced garlic

  • a bunch of cilantro

  • 1 cup of olive 🫒 oil

  • 1 big red onion or yellow onion 🧅

  • a blender

Preparation Time: 15-20 min.

Instructions:

  1. Peel garlic cloves and onion.

  2. Chop onions into 3-4 pieces.

  3. Wash and chop peppers into small chunks.

  4. Throw garlic, onions, and peppers into blender.

  5. Add 1/2 cup of olive oil into blender and puree.

  6. Once chunks have dissolved, stop blender and add cilantro leaves.

  7. Puree until all dissolved into liquid. *If mixture doesn't seem to be liquified enough, add more olive oil and continue blending until all big chunks are dissolved.

Storage:

Place the sofrito into a container that can be refrigerated. I like to store mine in a glass container because it keeps it fresher longer. This usually lasts me for about a month of cooking at least 3-4x a week. I usually use one tablespoon to season whatever I am cooking whether it's meat or beans or rice. I love to use this on ground meat when I am cooking burgers 🍔! It adds such a great flavor to your burger meat whether its beef, turkey, or chicken. I highly recommend it!
